Stephen M. Smith, MD
Stephen M. Smith, MD, a New Jersey native, received his degree in mathematics from Duke University
and then graduated with honors from the Yale School of Medicine in 1989.
After training in internal
medicine at the University of Virginia, Dr. Smith went the National Institutes of Health for his infectious
diseases fellowship.
Dr. Smith, a holder of two patents related to HIV, has authored over 40 articles on
infectious diseases and recently discovered a new strain of HIV.
Dr. Smith has participated in numerous
clinical trials, related to the development of new antibiotics and antiviral therapies. He has served on the
advisory board of several biotechnology companies. In 2009 Dr. Smith founded the Smith Center for
Infectious Diseases and Urban Health, a non-profit center, focusing on HIV care and treatment, in East
Orange and Newark. For the past 7 years Castle Connolly has named Dr. Smith one of New Jersey’s
Top Doctors in Infectious Diseases.
Dr. Smith serves as a trustee of the Essex County Medical Society
and is an attending in infectious diseases at Saint Barnabas Medical Center, Saint Michael’s Medical
Center, East Orange General Hospital, and Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.
