Donald T. Allegra, MD, FACP
Donald T. Allegra MD, FACP, was born and raised in
New Jersey. After graduating magna cum laude from Holy Cross in
l970, he earned his medical degree from Harvard Medical School in
1974.
He completed his internal medicine residency at the
University of Colorado in 1978. He did an additional year of medical
training in New Zealand and Australia during his residency. Dr.
Allegra was selected for the position of Epidemic Intelligence Service
officer at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and served from
1978-1980. He completed his Infectious Diseases fellowship at Emory
University in Atlanta, Georgia and began practice in San Antonio,
Texas in 1982.
He returned to New Jersey in 1987 and has been practicing
here since. Dr. Allegra was board certified in Internal Medicine
in 1978 and in Infectious Diseases 1982.
He is one of the few physicians nationally to achieve
certification in Tropical Medicine and Travelers’ Health. He is
a consultant physician at St. Clare’s Hospital in Denville and Dover,
Hackettstown Community Hospital, Morristown Memorial Hospital, and
the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation - Welkind Campus. Dr. Allegra
is a former Chief of Medicine at St. Clare’s Hospital.
Dr. Allegra was elected a fellow of the American College
of Physicians and is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society
of America, Infectious Diseases Society of New Jersey, the New Jersey
State Medical Society, the Morris County Medical Society, the American
Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and the International
Society of Travel Medicine. In November, 2003, Dr. Allegra received
the first Mufson Physician Humanitarian Award for his compassion,
commitment to continuing education, clinical competence, and the
respect of his peers.
