A rash is an area of irritated or swollen skin. The rash might be red and itchy, bumpy, scaly, crusty or blistered. Rashes are a symptom of many different medical conditions. A rash can be caused by other diseases, irritating substances, allergies and the individual's genetic makeup.

Contact dermatitis is a common cause of rashes. Contact dermatitis can cause redness, itching and burning at the site affected by the irritant, such as a chemical or allergen like poison ivy.

Some rashes develop immediately, while others form over several days. If an individual scratches a rash, it might take longer to heal. The treatment for a rash usually depends on the cause. Options for treatment include moisturizers, lotions, baths, cortisone creams that relieve swelling, and antihistamines, which relieve itching.
